France Is Burning? What's Really Behind the Riots: Fuel, Wages & Schools

Half a million people marched, a 143-year-old city hall burned and arrests neared 2,400. Nany Maree cuts through the noise: what the protesters actually want, and why it matters to the rest of us.

In Maree's words

Nany Maree here, from the Real Work desk. You've probably seen the headlines saying France is burning. Some of it was, love. But most of the half a million people who marched on Saturday 17 October went home with nothing broken but their feet.

So what were they marching for? It started in the schools. In late September, high school students around Paris began blocking their own gates, asking for more teachers and buildings that aren't falling apart. Then public servants went on strike for better pay. Then fuel climbed, with diesel near €2.40 a litre in September, and wages didn't keep up.

The hard bit is the purse. France's public debt is heading past 120 per cent of its economy next year, so there isn't much left for relief.

Saturday turned ugly in places. Limoges City Hall, 143 years old, was set alight and its roof came down. Arrests passed 1,800 by Sunday, and later reports put them near 2,400.

Why does it matter here on the Mid North Coast? Fuel that costs more every week, wages that don't stretch, schools short of teachers, and the cleaners, casuals and carers who feel it first.

The students asked fair questions. Burning a town hall doesn't answer any of them. So I'll keep asking: when the purse is empty, who decides which kids get the teacher?
