Mustering in January taught me heat doesn't care how tough you think you are. Turns out age makes it worse.
A study in The Lancet Planetary Health, led by a Stanford researcher, modelled heat risk by age. People over 60 hit dangerous heat at temperatures 4.7 to 7.5 degrees lower than young adults do. At 1.5 degrees of global warming, about 22 per cent of over-60s worldwide, roughly 290 million people, would face at least a month of unsafe heat a year. Young adults wouldn't get there until 4 degrees.
It's modelling, not a head count. But it matches what I saw on the wards every summer.
So this summer I'm treating 34 degrees the way I used to treat 40. Water by the chair, curtains drawn by ten.
