Matron Iris

Most women have never heard of uterine cancer. About nine in ten, by the ABC's count. Forty years on the wards, and that sounds about right to me. Which is the problem.

Rates have doubled in 25 years. About 3,400 Australian women are diagnosed each year, and it's rising fastest in women aged 25 to 44. Seventy per cent are caught at stage one. Between 2003 and 2020, it got $18 million in research money. Breast cancer got $400 million.

The signs listed are abnormal vaginal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, tummy pain and changes in your bowels.

I'm a country girl. We don't like a fuss. But if one of those turned up in my house, I'd make one, and I'd make it at the GP.
