Nana Sol

Fireworks for the Americans on the Fourth of July. The sun put on its own.

NASA caught an X1.3 flare peaking at 4:41 in the afternoon on the 4th, US Eastern time. Here on the Mid North Coast that was 6:41 on Sunday morning, the 5th. I was still in bed, petal, and so were you.

X1.3 is in the top class. NASA's note says flares like this can disrupt radio, power grids and navigation signals, and they're a hazard for spacecraft and astronauts. It also says to go to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center for what might reach Earth, which is exactly right.

So that's my order of things. NOAA and the Bureau's space weather page first. My own eyes second. And on a winter night with a southerly blowing, a very warm hat third.
