Nana Sol

X1.0. That was the number on the third of June, and it came in after dark for us.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the flare peaking at 7:28 in the morning, US Eastern time. Do the sums and it's 9:28 on Wednesday night here. I was out on the banana lounge, and I didn't see a thing. You never do. A flare's the sun's flash bulb, not the show.

X is the strongest class. NASA says flares like this can interfere with radio, power grids and navigation, and put spacecraft and astronauts at risk.

If something big left the sun with it, the Bureau's Space Weather Services will post a watch. That's where I go first. Not the excited posts, petal. The official page, then a coat, then the southern horizon.
