Two big flares, one after the other, and both on our Friday the 24th.
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught an X2.4 that peaked at 9:07 on the Thursday night, US Eastern time. That's 11:07 Friday morning here on the Manning. Then an X2.5 at 4:13 their Friday morning, which made it 6:13 our Friday evening. X is the top class, petal. The strongest kind the sun throws.
NASA says flares like these can upset radio, power grids and navigation signals, and they're a risk for spacecraft and astronauts.
A flare is light, though, and it's here and gone in minutes. Whether we get colour in the southern sky depends on what follows it out. So I'll keep the Bureau's space weather page open and the thermos warm, and expect nothing.
