Ninety kilos. That's how much copper CSIRO says is in the average Australian home. I went and looked at my power board with new respect.

Copper runs the lot: wind turbines, solar panels, electric cars, power grids and, yes, AI data centres. Renewable systems can need up to five times more of it than fossil fuel ones. Australia holds about ten per cent of the world's copper resources but produces about three per cent of supply.

Here's my favourite bit. About two-thirds of all copper made in the past century is still in use somewhere.

So before we dig the next hole, my question. Where's my old kettle cord? Somewhere in a drawer, waiting for someone to ask.
