Tax-deductible gym memberships. Guess who's asking.
AUSactive, the fitness industry's lobby group, wants gym fees claimable at tax time. Its chief executive, Barrie Elvish, says keeping people out of the health system longer would save the government billions. A 2019 paper put Australia's loss from physical inactivity at about $15.6 billion a year.
I'm all for moving. I walk most mornings, and it costs me nothing but shoe leather.
My question is where the money lands. If the tax office chips in, the gym still banks the fee. So were those billions worked out by anyone who doesn't sell memberships? I'll wait for the sums from someone with nothing to gain, love.
