A mosquito virus most of us couldn't spell last month has turned up in fourteen piggeries across four states. That got my attention quicker than any press release.
On 4 March the acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Sonya Bennett, declared Japanese encephalitis a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance. Queensland has its first human case in more than twenty years, and other unexplained cases are being checked. Fewer than one in a hundred infected people get seriously ill. It spreads by mosquito bite, not person to person, and not through pork.
Vaccine doses are going to at-risk groups first, especially piggery workers.
My question: how many doses, and who's counting? The announcement doesn't say. While I wait, I'm wearing long sleeves at dusk and tipping the water out of my pot saucers.
