Raw oysters for Christmas? Check where they're from first.

NSW Health is investigating an outbreak of Vibrio parahaemolyticus infections linked to raw Pacific oysters from Coffin Bay in South Australia. At least fifteen people were diagnosed this month. South Australia closed the Coffin Bay growing areas on 16 November.

Symptoms usually show within a day. Most people get over it in about three days with rest and fluids, though it can drag on up to twelve. Those with weaker immune systems may end up in hospital. NSW oysters are still fine, as they meet the state's shellfish rules.

Our own Manning River growers will be pleased to hear that. Me, I'm asking my fishmonger one question this December. Where did these come from? It's a fair thing to know.
