A hundred and forty-eight recommendations. Eight volumes. I filed less than that in a year at the practice.

The aged care royal commission handed down its final report on Monday. About one in three people in residential aged care have substandard facilities, and around 100,000 Australians are waiting for home care. The government pledged $452 million straight away. The Prime Minister said generational change is required.

Then the two commissioners couldn't agree on who should run the regulator. One wanted an independent body. The other worried that would weaken ministers' accountability.

I'm not taking sides between them. My question is simpler. If the two people who heard every bit of evidence can't agree, who decides? And do the families who gave that evidence get a say? I'll be reading all eight volumes. Slowly.
