Two hundred dollars. That's what a bare face will cost you in Melbourne from Wednesday night.
With 363 new cases recorded in a day, Premier Daniel Andrews and Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton announced masks will be compulsory in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire from 11:59pm on 22 July. Kids under 12 are exempt. So are people with medical reasons, and teachers while they're teaching.
The Premier says police will use common sense. I hope so.
Here's my question. A rule with a fine attached needs fine print to match. Who decides what counts as a medical reason, and what does the person at the shop door ask for? I'm up the coast, so it isn't my face yet. But I've filed enough forms to know an exemption is only as good as the paperwork behind it.
