Apples went up. The growers didn't see the money. So who did? I'll give you one guess.
Apple and Pear Australia's figures show the big supermarkets' margin on apples hit 65 per cent early this year, up from an average of about 25. The shelf price went from around $4.50 a kilo eighteen months ago to about $6.20 at the peak. It's near $5.20 now.
The shortage was real. Drought in Victoria's Goulburn Valley, orchards merged, growers walking away. APAL's Jeremy Griffith says the return for growers has been too low for six or seven years.
