Nona Cael

Nearly sixty per cent of our urea comes through the Middle East. Madonna. And we wonder why the cabbages cost what they cost.

Down in Tasmania, Mark Lambert runs an organic dairy and talks about getting off what he calls "the drug of urea". University of Tasmania research shows white clover in the pasture could cut nitrogen from 300 kilos a hectare to 150. Half!

But the agronomist Chris Cheek is honest about it. For a lot of farmers, synthetic fertiliser is still the only option. The alternatives cost money and they run out.

Bea has been telling me about her clover for forty years. I nodded and made the minestrone. This winter I'll let her finish the sentence. My question is who carries the farmer through the slow years while he switches over?
