Fertiliser went from $800 a tonne to $1,800 in six weeks. Six weeks! My father would have gone pale under his tan.

That's the war in Iran pushing up fuel and fertiliser. Ben Bennett from Australian Dairy Farmers wants 30 cents more on a litre of milk, so home brand goes from $1.65 to $1.95. Still under two dollars. The processors have already promised five cents extra from the first of May.

Fred Harrison at Ritchies IGA reckons milk and bread go up within four to six weeks. One market analyst says regional shops could cop ten per cent. Ten. Out here, where we live.

My opinion? Pay the farmer his thirty cents. I want my ricotta to come from a cow somebody can still afford to milk. Sit. Eat. Then we talk about the bill.
