The koalas are getting their park. Paid for, it turns out, with carbon credits.
The Great Koala National Park will run from Grafton down to Kempsey, 476,000 hectares, due by March 2027. The plan is to stop logging in 176,000 hectares of state forest and sell carbon credits off that to help pay for it. The Senate knocked back a bid to block it this month. It still has to clear the House and the Clean Energy Regulator.
ANU's Frank Jotzo reckons the park might not have happened without the credits. UNSW's Megan Evans says national parks shouldn't have to earn their keep. Timber NSW says imported timber will do more harm.
Me? I'm glad about the trees. I just wonder what happens to a forest that's paying its own rent when the market drops.
