Cockroaches. Good news about cockroaches. Stay with me.
Lord Howe Island got rid of its rats and mice in 2019. More than 300,000 of them. Sydney Uni went back and counted the creepy-crawlies, and the island's bugs are up about sixty per cent on the survey taken before. Nine thousand specimens the first time. Fifteen thousand the second. The big fellas did best, the slaters and the native bush cockroaches.
One of the students said it feels like the island is coming to life. I believe her.
Now, nobody's asking you to love the roach in your pantry. But take the pests out and the little workers come straight back, every time I've seen it. Makes me wonder what's waiting under our own rubbish heaps.
