Forty turtles pulled out of the mud. That's what it took at the Gingham Waterhole, out in the Gwydir Wetlands near Moree.

When the water dropped, they dug in and went to sleep, waiting for it to come back. Clever, but some kinds can only hold on so long. Researchers found about fifteen dead. Dr Debbie Bower from UNE said she'd never seen turtles buried in the mud like that, waiting on their fate.

Here's the rub. The environmental water was bought and paid for. WaterNSW stopped the flows in March after nearby landholders threatened legal action over flooding. The Minister says they're working to get it moving again.

I've had a dam go dry under a hot sky. I'd just like to know who speaks for the turtles when the lawyers come out.
