Tesla proposes Australia's largest public EV charging hub, 37 bays at Thurgoona

The $3.5 million Albury site would carry solar canopies of up to 100 kilowatts and is aimed at long-distance Hume Highway drivers.

Why it matters here

The Pacific Highway through Taree, Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour is the east coast's other great EV corridor, and the same summer peaks that clog regional hubs at Christmas hit our service centres too. What gets built on the Hume now is the template for what gets asked of our towns next.

Thirty-seven bays under a solar roof. Lovely gadget. But 100 kilowatts of canopy is a fraction of what 37 fast chargers draw at once, so most of the power will come off the grid, and nothing in the report says how much or from where. Chargers have grown twelve-fold while EVs tripled, which is good news on summer holidays and a question on who is paying for idle capacity the rest of the year. When the grid bill for a hub like this lands, whose meter does it go on?
