Fisheries Queensland investigated coral overharvesting on the Great Barrier Reef
Antler coral was overfished by 30 per cent last season, and Fisheries Queensland won't release what its investigation found.
What the source says
- Fisheries Queensland confirmed it investigated overharvesting of coral on the Great Barrier Reef but has declined to release the findings.
- Coral harvesters may take up to 190 tonnes from the reef each year, much of it for the global aquarium trade.
- In the 2025-2026 season, antler coral (Pocillopora grandis) was overfished by 30 per cent, according to FishNet data, and coral catch quotas have been breached several times in recent years.
- Fisheries Queensland says going over a competitive quota is "not uncommon or unreasonable".
- Simon Miller of the Australian Marine Conservation Society said: "They're meant to be some kind of precautionary catch limit yet we keep seeing them overshoot year after year."
- Coral reef ecologist Dr Morgan Pratchett said the species is not under threat, but "it sends a bad message given the overwhelming international scrutiny on how this industry is being managed."

A reef is a garden too, love, and you don't keep picking past the limit because the limit is a race. The industry says its footprint is small and it wants better compliance, and fair enough, but a precautionary limit that's overshot every year isn't precaution at all. If the investigation found nothing to worry about, why not let us read it?
